The Savusavu Hospital’s X-ray machine has been non-operational since last year, significantly impacting local patients who now must travel long distances for basic diagnostic care. Sub-divisional medical officer Dr. Tiko Saumalua confirmed that plans are underway to install a new machine, but residents are expressing frustration due to the delays in service and essential supplies.
Local resident Emosi Baravilala shared a particularly troubling experience: after sustaining an injury where he was crushed between two boats, he spent over $500 to receive treatment in Labasa, only to learn of two broken ribs after initially being told he had bruised ribs. His situation exemplifies the urgent need for timely healthcare services.
Compounding the issue, hospitals in the Northern Division, including Savusavu, are reportedly facing shortages of essential medications. Graham Harris, another community member, recounted how he purchased critical medication for the hospital himself, spending over $1,000 on items like Ventolin and saline solutions that were unavailable in-house. Reports indicate these medications have been out of stock for months and delays in procurement processes are exacerbating the problem.
Dr. Saumalua indicated that the Ministry of Health is actively working on replenishing supplies by utilizing a tracking system called M-Supply to redistribue medical stock from nearby facilities. However, he urged the public to remain patient as the ministry confronts these challenges.
Notably, this issue is not new. Similar concerns regarding the Savusavu Hospital’s X-ray machine have been echoed by local leaders, including Avikash Pillay of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, who has been advocating for repairs while emphasizing the community’s readiness to assist. Businessman Aren Nunnink even investigated the X-ray machine and found that it merely required a software upgrade, offering to cover repair costs. However, communication barriers with health authorities continue to hinder prompt action.
The recent national budget allocation of $12 million for improvements to Labasa Hospital, which includes refurbishments for Savusavu, raises hope that these vital healthcare services will soon be enhanced. Despite the current challenges, the dedication of local residents and business leaders to improve healthcare access in their community provides a positive indication of potential progress.
As the community and authorities work together to address these pressing healthcare issues, there is hope for the necessary repairs and medication supplies to be secured, ensuring that residents receive the quality healthcare they need and deserve.
