The International Women’s Association (IWA) Fiji has taken proactive steps to deliver saline solutions to children hospitalized at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital amid reports of a global shortage of intravenous (IV) fluids. This initiative arises as concerns grow over the handling of supplies in the country’s healthcare system.

Despite the IWA’s involvement, the Health Ministry has publicly stated that there is no shortage of IV fluids in Fiji and remains optimistic about current supplies being adequate, especially in light of increasing dengue fever cases. The Ministry highlighted that 3,000 units of saline were received recently, with another 4,200 units awaiting clearance for distribution.

However, the IWA has raised alarms over reports that patients are sometimes required to purchase their own saline, indicating a troubling lack of urgency in the management of IV fluid supplies. They’ve called for better transparency and collaboration in addressing this issue, asserting that more orders have been placed to further support healthcare needs.

This ongoing situation reflects a larger narrative regarding Fiji’s healthcare system, which has faced scrutiny over recent shortages across various medical supplies. An earlier report emphasized the need for systemic reforms in procurement practices within the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services to enhance the reliability of the healthcare supply chain.

There is a growing consensus among health experts that while challenges exist, they also present an opportunity for significant reforms that can lead to a more resilient healthcare system. Engaging the community in prevention strategies, as well as fostering collaboration among stakeholders, could play a crucial role in overcoming these challenges and improving health outcomes for all Fijians. Overall, the response from organizations like IWA showcases the community’s commitment to supporting healthcare efforts during this critical time.
