Health Sector Transformation: A $5.45 Million Leap Forward

In a promising development for the health sector during the early 1980s, a report in The Fiji Times on September 27, 1984, highlighted plans for significant improvements in nursing education. The Central Nursing School in Tamavua, established in 1908 for midwifery training, is set to be replaced by a new $5.45 million complex funded by the Japanese Government.

The agreement for this venture was signed that week in Suva by Jonati Mavoa, the then Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Kikuo Yoshida, the Japanese Ambassador. Construction of the new facility is scheduled to commence in January and is anticipated to be completed by late 1985.

The new complex will include an administration building, lecture halls, dormitories, and will accommodate up to 400 students, with additional equipment for nursing education provided as part of the grant. Dr. Mesake Biumaiwai, the permanent secretary for Health, expressed optimism, noting that the ministry had been advocating for improved facilities for over 15 years. With the new school, a significant increase in student capacity is expected, allowing for 360 students at a time to meet the growing staffing needs in nursing stations.

Previously, the school admitted only 60 students annually. In the lead-up to the construction, nursing students had been attending classes at Nasinu Teachers Training College while the school’s outdated wooden structures were being demolished. Additionally, all third-year nursing students were relocated for technical training at Lautoka Hospital.

Dr. Biumaiwai confirmed plans for the Lautoka Nursing School to merge with the Central Nursing School by 1986, while Lautoka Hospital will continue to provide technical training for graduates. By 1986, the new school is expected to facilitate two annual intakes of 120 students each.

Discussions were also underway involving the Public Works Department, Ministry of Health officials, and Tokyo-based architect Azusa Sekkei regarding the new building designs, which will be located on a 2.9-hectare site beside Princes Rd in Suva.
