Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka has addressed the recent health incident along the Coral Coast that resulted in the hospitalization of seven guests, labeling it as “an extremely isolated incident.” In an effort to reassure both domestic and international visitors, he stated that comprehensive investigations are currently underway.

The seven affected individuals were taken to Aspen Lautoka Hospital for further assessment and care. Mr. Gavoka noted that initial inquiries by health officials have not uncovered any additional cases related to this incident. “Our health team has performed preliminary investigations, and to date, no further incidents have been reported,” he said.

The minister clarified that the incident occurred at a specific bar within a resort, with no other related incidents recorded either at the establishment or elsewhere in Fiji. Highlighting the long-standing reputation of the resort, which is particularly favored by Australian tourists, he emphasized that management is fully cooperating with authorities to address the situation.

Mr. Gavoka mentioned, “The management is concerned for the welfare of their guests and is fully cooperating with authorities,” while refraining from any speculation on the cause until further results can be obtained from ongoing investigations and laboratory testing. Importantly, he confirmed that the resort has not engaged in any practices that could compromise the safety of its guests, such as altering the quality or ingredients of their offerings.

He expressed confidence in Fiji’s tourism sector, noting that thousands of visitors safely experience the country annually, with a million tourist visits recorded each year. “This is the only reported case of its kind that we have experienced in recent memory, and notably, nothing similar has occurred this year,” Mr. Gavoka underscored.

As the festive season approaches, Mr. Gavoka advised visitors to exercise caution regarding their consumption choices and assured that the situation is being closely monitored. He conveyed positive news regarding the health condition of the affected guests, hoping for their continued improvement.

In summary, while the incident has raised some concerns, it appears to be limited, with effective measures being taken by health authorities and the resort management to ensure a safe tourism experience in Fiji. This commitment to guest safety and health illustrates the resilience of Fiji’s tourism sector, which continues to thrive even in challenging situations.
