The newly inaugurated Dogo Health Centre will provide crucial healthcare services to over 8,000 residents in the districts of Dawasamu, Namena, and Sawakasa in North Tailevu. This facility is designed to enhance the medical services in the area, which include oversight of nursing stations located at Ratu Kadavulevu School, Dawasamu, and Queen Victoria School.
At the commissioning of the health centre, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the Coalition Government’s commitment to improving quality healthcare access. He highlighted the opening as a significant achievement for both the Government and the people of Tailevu North, particularly benefiting communities in Sawakasa, Dawasamu, and Namena. He expressed gratitude to the Minister for Health, the Permanent Secretary, and the Government of New Zealand for their ongoing support in bolstering Fiji’s health sector.
The Dogo Health Centre has been revitalized after a devastating fire in 2017 and was funded by the New Zealand Government at a total cost of $472,895. Prime Minister Rabuka also addressed the pressing healthcare challenge posed by Non-Communicable Diseases, encouraging community members to utilize the health services by getting their blood sugar and blood pressure checked.
He stressed the importance of individual health responsibility, stating, “Our health is our wealth, and we must all take responsibility to look after ourselves—for our families, our community, and our nation.” He added that ensuring the health of families and communities is vital for building a strong Fiji.
New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Ms. Charlotte Darlow, reiterated her country’s commitment to supporting Fiji in health, climate resilience and adaptation, and economic empowerment initiatives.
In summary, the opening of the Dogo Health Centre marks a vital advancement in healthcare access for the local community, emphasizing the significance of health in overall societal wellbeing. This initiative reflects a dedicated effort to enhance public health services, providing hope and improving the quality of life for many citizens. The collaboration between Fiji and New Zealand further strengthens ties and showcases international support in healthcare development.
