The Ministry of Health has recently taken significant enforcement action against several local businesses, imposing a total of $14,900 in fines for violations of public health and safety regulations. This initiative forms part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with health standards, ultimately aimed at safeguarding consumer welfare.
The fines were distributed among various establishments, including $1,000 for a coffee shop, $2,600 for a takeaway and retail establishment, $3,100 for one retail store, $1,200 for another retail shop, and $500 for a takeaway business. Additionally, street food vendors faced penalties amounting to $1,500 due to compliance failures.
Taina Rauvala, head of the Food Unit, announced that a notable retail shop in Rakiraki Town has been ordered to shut down due to repeated violations concerning health regulations. Significant issues identified during inspections included meat products exhibiting freezer burn and unpleasant odors, malfunctioning freezers that failed to meet required temperatures, inadequate records for cleaning and pest control, and the presence of pests like weevils and cockroaches in storage areas and shelves.
Rauvala underscored the ministry’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that businesses fulfill licensing requirements and uphold high cleanliness and safety standards. She emphasized the importance of compliance for both consumer health and the establishment of a fair marketplace for all business owners. The Food Unit remains committed to enforcing these regulations and supporting legitimate business practices.
This current enforcement mirrors past actions, such as the closure of a supermarket in Nadi last week over serious food safety violations, including the sale of expired items and unsanitary conditions.
