Concerns regarding patient safety at the antenatal clinic of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital were raised earlier this week following reports of a significant water leak at the facility. The Ministry of Health confirmed the water leak, stating that it was promptly addressed once it was brought to their attention.
Initial investigations indicated that the leak originated from an old drainage pipe, previously sealed during renovations undertaken by an external group for the maternity washrooms. Over time, the seal had deteriorated, resulting in water seeping into the clinic.
In response to these findings, repairs have been completed, and the impacted areas have been thoroughly cleaned and restored. The ministry reassured the public that the clinic is now safe, fully operational, and open for patients.
The issue gained public attention on December 15 when social justice advocate Judy Compain shared images and accounts on social media, highlighting water leaking from the ceilings in examination rooms. This raised significant concerns regarding the clinic’s safety and its ability to provide a suitable environment for expectant mothers. Compain first noticed the leak on December 12 and expressed concern that the issue had not been resolved by Monday morning, despite the clinic remaining operational.
Compain also questioned the implications for expectant mothers needing care in affected examination rooms and expressed worry for the clinic staff required to work in such conditions. In light of these events, Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has initiated a detailed investigation to confirm the initial findings and assess the need for further remediation. He has also ordered a temporary halt on any future renovation work by the contractors involved in the earlier washroom project until the investigation concludes.
The swift response by the health authorities reflects a commitment to patient safety and the well-being of both expectant mothers and healthcare staff at the clinic.
