The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced a centralization of overtime approvals through the Office of the Permanent Secretary, a decision prompted by concerns of overspending in the past six months. This measure comes after an internal circular from CWM Hospital regarding overtime payments for medical staff circulated on social media, drawing attention to the issue.
In a statement released following a senior management meeting on January 27, 2026, the Ministry acknowledged that the growing overtime expenses have exceeded budget allocations. The meeting aimed to enhance oversight and coordination while reinforcing budgetary controls, which officials agree are essential for responsible public fund management.
Under the new policy, Cost Centre Heads will submit overtime requests through prescribed channels, with the final approvals being made by the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services. This shift is intended to improve financial governance without compromising essential health services.
The Ministry emphasized that the new process is designed to ensure that overtime is effectively managed and justified, in alignment with available resources. It aims to strike a balance between maintaining crucial health services and exercising prudent financial stewardship.
This proactive approach reflects the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing accountability and transparency in budget management, fostering trust in public health administration.
