Former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was recently admitted to the hospital after collapsing due to a stroke and heart-related issues, as reported at the High Court in Suva. His legal representative, Gul Fatima, presented a medical report to Chief Justice Salesi Temo which indicated that Sayed-Khaiyum will need further medical evaluation.

The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Nancy Tikoisuva, had no objections to Sayed-Khaiyum’s absence from scheduled court proceedings, which included a hearing regarding his application for a variation of bail to receive medical treatment abroad. This hearing has now been postponed to August 1, allowing the defense ample time to assess Sayed-Khaiyum’s health condition and to provide an update on their response to the State’s affidavit contesting the bail variation request.

This incident occurs amidst ongoing legal challenges for Sayed-Khaiyum, who is facing multiple serious charges, including abuse of office. His medical situation has raised concerns, especially in light of a previous request to travel overseas for specialized medical treatment, which was denied by the court. Nevertheless, the understanding shown by the court towards Sayed-Khaiyum’s health highlights a compassionate approach during such a stressful time.

Overall, while Sayed-Khaiyum confronts significant health and legal hurdles, there is a hopeful sentiment surrounding his recovery process, which will ultimately enable him to address his legal situation more effectively.
