Chief Justice Salesi Temo has expressed his hopes for a quick recovery for former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who is currently receiving treatment at Lautoka Aspen Hospital after experiencing health complications. Sayed-Khaiyum was admitted following a stroke and heart-related issues earlier this week, prompting a hearing regarding his bail variation request to travel abroad for medical care to be postponed.
Lawyer Gul Fatima reported to the court that Sayed-Khaiyum’s health condition prevents him from attending scheduled court appearances. Doctors have not yet set a date for his discharge, as he requires additional evaluations. This situation has delayed the legal proceedings against him, where he faces serious charges of abuse of office alongside the former supervisor of elections, who is accused of receiving a corrupt benefit.
Justice Temo highlighted the need for Sayed-Khaiyum to recover quickly to continue with the trial, which is slated to begin on September 15. The next court date is set for August 1, at which time the court will receive updates on Sayed-Khaiyum’s health status. In the meantime, the bail of his co-defendant, Mohammed Saneem, has been extended.
The court’s understanding of Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical condition reflects a compassionate approach amid the ongoing pressures he faces in both his health and legal matters. Despite the challenging circumstances, there is a collective hope for his improvement, which will enable him to address the legal charges he currently faces.
