A panel of three medical doctors has concluded that former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum did not suffer a stroke, contradicting his earlier claims. This assessment was drawn from a review of a medical report dated July 20. Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Nancy Tikoisuva, presented this finding in court, suggesting that Sayed-Khaiyum might be exaggerating his symptoms to rationalize his recent trip to Singapore for medical procedures. The panel noted discrepancies between his medical report and past medical records.

Currently hospitalized at Lautoka’s Aspen Medical Hospital, Sayed-Khaiyum faces charges of abuse of office tied to financial dealings with former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem. Tikoisuva referenced previous comments from Justice Daniel Goundar that indicated Sayed-Khaiyum’s health was not critically severe, given he had not been hospitalized prior and was still managing his law firm, although it has since been temporarily closed.

The medical panel also indicated that proper alternative investigative medical treatments are available in Fiji. They have requested that Sayed-Khaiyum’s brain imaging be sent to CWM Hospital for further evaluation by specialists there. Tikoisuva emphasized the need for the court to consider the evidence that suggests Sayed-Khaiyum might have reasons not to return to Fiji if his bail conditions are modified.

Defense attorney Gul Fatima argued that her client’s medical assessments indicate an urgent need for overseas medical care. She highlighted the psychological strain on Sayed-Khaiyum and the challenges he faces if unable to participate in his own defense due to health issues. Fatima further expressed concerns about the interaction of CID officers with her client in the hospital without proper authorization.

Sayed-Khaiyum is scheduled for a medical reassessment on August 14, with the court expected to rule on the bail matters related to his case on August 15. The complexities surrounding his health situation and legal challenges shed light on the importance of balancing judicial processes with health needs.

The ongoing attention to Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical condition reflects a compassionate understanding from the judicial system, emphasizing the hope that he will soon be fit enough to confront the legal allegations against him. The court’s actions demonstrate a commitment to ensuring fairness and health considerations in legal proceedings.
