Health Advocate Takes the Stage at Hibiscus Festival

Shyla Prasad, representing the Ministry of Health, expresses her belief that happiness is true richness, health is actual wealth, and peace of mind is the ultimate success as she participates in this year’s Hibiscus Festival. She champions the significance of healthcare, particularly in the areas of HIV and AIDS, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and mental health.

As a committed Medical Laboratory Scientist with a deep passion for healthcare and animal welfare, Shyla, originally from Labasa but raised in Lautoka, always dreamed of studying in Suva. This aspiration became a reality when her family moved to the capital, allowing her to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science at the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences.

With three years of professional experience at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), she feels honored to represent her workplace on the Miss Hibiscus platform. “My love for Suva grows stronger as I am privileged to be working in Fiji’s largest and historical hospital,” she noted. CWM celebrates its 101st anniversary this year, established to honor Fijians who served in World War I, further enriching Suva’s historical context for Shyla.

Outside her medical career, Shyla enjoys sports, traveling, and caring for animals. Her interests include fishing, reading, and participating in various sports. She actively engages in voluntary work, including outreach programs with the Sai Prema Foundation at the Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre. Her compassion for animals is evident through her community involvement, particularly in the adoption and care of stray animals, and she aspires to open her own animal shelter in the future.

Shyla is among ten contestants competing for the crown at the 68th Hibiscus Festival, slated to be held at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31st to September 7th. Sponsored by FMF and Vodafone, this year’s festival is set to be a remarkable celebration showcasing the talents and advocacy of Fiji’s best.
