Tomasi Radakua, a 39-year-old musician from Nukuloa, Gau, in Fiji’s Lomaiviti Province, is carving out his niche in the local music scene. His journey into music began in his youth at the Vatuwaqa Methodist Church in Suva, where both of his parents were active choir members, nurturing his early interest in singing. Radakua reflected on his beginnings, sharing how his participation in the church choir at the age of eight introduced him to music and performance.
As he progressed through school, Radakua was influenced by the works of Isireli Gumatua, a notable musician whose talent inspired his own aspirations. After completing high school, Radakua worked at Flour Mills of Fiji but faced personal challenges, including a mental health crisis that led to his hospitalization in 2014.
After recovering, he shifted his focus to caring for his aging parents while deepening his commitment to music. Music became not just a passion but a powerful tool for healing during his recovery. Radakua began composing his songs, finding inspiration in his faith and daily experiences. He views his lyrics as divine gifts, a reflection of his connection to God.
Since this year, he has been working with the Psychiatric Survivors Association, advocating for mental health awareness. This role has further fueled his musical creativity, allowing him to write songs that resonate with others facing similar struggles. His recent work, including the song “Nothing About Us, Without Us,” gained recognition during the International Day of People with Disabilities.
Radakua has a hopeful message for those facing adversity, emphasizing that everyone has unique gifts and potential. He encourages individuals to embrace their talents and contribute to positive change in the world.
This inspiring story highlights how music can serve as a therapeutic outlet and a beacon of hope for those grappling with mental health challenges. Radakua’s journey is a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of supporting one another through life’s obstacles.
