In an inspiring demonstration of regional unity and compassion, a dedicated team of medical volunteers from New Zealand is preparing to undertake a vital initiative, providing free life-saving heart surgeries to children across the Pacific Islands, including Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu.

Scheduled to take place from July 19 to 30, the esteemed Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Suva will host this latest mission, conducted in partnership with the Pasifika Medical Association Group and the Hearts4Kids Foundation. This initiative is part of the hospital’s ongoing “Gift of Life” program, which provides essential cardiac treatment to young patients born with congenital heart disease (CHD) at no cost to their families.

The mission is led by Dr. Kirsten Finucane, a former head of Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery at Auckland’s Starship Hospital. Accompanying Dr. Finucane is a skilled team of surgeons, nurses, and technicians who are set to work closely with local Fijian medical staff to deliver care to dozens of young patients throughout the two-week period.

Dr. Finucane emphasized the mission’s broader goals beyond just performing surgeries. “We can treat more children, but our work goes beyond surgeries. We’re focused on building local capacity, creating a sustainable model, and ensuring that children across the Pacific have access to equitable healthcare,” she stated.

Dr. Krupali Tappoo, the hospital’s director, echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the return of the Uto Bulabula Team, highlighting the hospital’s foundation built on care and compassion. “No child in the Pacific should suffer or die simply due to a lack of access to life-saving treatment,” Dr. Tappoo affirmed, underscoring the hospital’s commitment to offering hope and care to the families it serves.

Since its inception, the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital has performed over 378 pediatric heart surgeries, significantly impacting the landscape of healthcare in the region by providing essential services that families simply could not afford otherwise. The remarkable work being done at this hospital not only offers immediate medical attention but also builds a brighter future for children facing serious health challenges.

The continuing engagement of international medical professionals and organizations shows a powerful commitment to enhancing pediatric cardiac health in the Pacific, ensuring that access to lifesaving interventions is becoming a reality for many families. Such initiatives pave the way for a healthier future for children, reinforcing the importance of collective efforts in the face of health challenges and the profound impact of compassion in healthcare.

This initiative exemplifies hope, demonstrating that through dedication, collaboration, and expertise, many lives can be transformed for the better in communities across the Pacific.
