Assistant Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, is optimistic that the Truth and Reconciliation Bill will be presented to Parliament during the December session. This positive development coincides with St Agnes Parish in Nabua, which has initiated trauma awareness workshops led by Father Ioane Sigarara.
During a recent church service, Ms. Kiran praised Father Sigarara for taking this important step towards encouraging dialogue and fostering healing within the community. She acknowledged the lingering pain and emotions tied to historical events, emphasizing the significance of addressing trauma and understanding its effects on individuals and families.
“It’s evident that trauma has been passed down through generations, making it crucial for us to begin this healing process,” Ms. Kiran stated. She expressed hope that as the initiative expands to other regions, more individuals and organizations will engage in these vital conversations.
Father Sigarara highlighted the need for open discussions about the unresolved issues stemming from the 1987 coup, noting that many parish members have personal experiences of these historical events. He emphasized that society has, until now, lacked a safe space for people to express their pain and trauma.
“It’s a burden that holds us back from moving forward,” Father Sigarara explained, outlining his mission to help individuals process their experiences in a supportive environment where they can connect with other survivors. This journey towards healing and recovery is a key focus of his work.
Next week, the first cluster of 30 participants is set to begin their trauma awareness workshops, marking the start of a new chapter for the community in addressing their shared past.
This initiative not only reflects a step towards healing but also serves as an avenue for reconciliation and unity. As communities come together to address their wounds, there is hope for a future where individuals can find strength through shared experiences and work towards a more harmonious society.
