After 24 years of waiting for closure, the family of Lance Corporal Simione Rawaileba has finally found peace following a reconciliation initiative by former members of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit (CRWU) and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This momentous event took place as families affected by the 2000 mutiny received apologies and acknowledgment from those involved.
Salanieta Rawaileba, the widow of LCPL Rawaileba, expressed the profound grief that has lingered since her husband’s death during the conflict between loyal soldiers and CRW members. She reflected on the emotional burden the family has carried, stating that each commemoration day rekindled the pain of their loss. “Every commemoration day, we’re always filled with his huge loss; nothing seemed to have really healed despite the wreaths and embraces we get,” she shared.
Her sentiment transformed when the members of CRWU addressed the past, offering apologies that brought her a sense of healing. “Nothing can compare to people owning up to their wrongdoings and admitting their mistakes of the past,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of recognition in her journey toward healing.
Accompanied by her son Mulase, who followed his father’s footsteps into the military, Salanieta conveyed her gratitude towards the Government and the RFMF Commander for initiating this program. “I had to control myself today. It has been a long time coming. God is a God of forgiveness, and this reconciliation is to heal everyone,” she stated.
This reconciliation signifies a significant step towards healing for many who have suffered similar losses, demonstrating the power of acknowledgment and forgiveness within a community moving toward unity and peace.
This event not only serves as a personal closure for the Rawaileba family but also symbolizes hope for others affected by past conflicts, reminding us that healing is possible through compassion and understanding.
