Healing a Nation: The Call for Truth and Reconciliation

Sashi Kiran, the chair of the Truth and Reconciliation steering committee and Assistant Minister for Women, emphasized the ongoing need for national healing. Speaking at the Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light Summit in Suva on Saturday, she highlighted that addressing past traumas is essential for creating a brighter future for the youth.

“Our nation’s history has shown us that seeking harmony is not just an option but a requirement for everyone’s well-being,” Ms. Kiran remarked. She acknowledged the challenging history over the past forty years and recognized the substantial work still necessary to heal the nation.

Ms. Kiran reiterated the government’s dedication to the truth and reconciliation initiative, announcing that a bill to form the commission will be presented in Parliament soon. She also praised the Republic of Fiji Military Forces for initiating an internal reconciliation and restoration program.

“The efforts of reconciliation within the RFMF are commendable,” she said. “Although discussions about the RFMF can be challenging, they inspire us to tackle difficult conversations in our own areas, which is never easy.”

She stressed the importance of creating dialogue spaces and fostering healing and peacebuilding in various settings, including work, family, and community. During the consultations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, young individuals shared their appreciation for the initiative and discussed the impacts of past political unrest on their families and communities.
