The Vodafone Fiji Bati camp is taking a cautious approach with Jarryd Hayne’s return to play. Head coach Wise Kativerata has not yet finalized the eligibility of several overseas-based players, which has slightly delayed the announcement of the final squad for the upcoming October-November competition.
Kativerata sees Hayne’s potential contribution to the team as a significant asset. Discussions have been held with Hayne about his health and mental well-being, especially since he has not played rugby league in four years. His involvement could provide a substantial boost to the young Fijian players preparing for the Pacific Bowl Championship in Suva next month.
Focusing on local talent from the Vodafone Cup, Kativerata has expressed admiration for the skills and potential exhibited by several young players. He plans to offer them a chance to showcase their abilities on the international stage.
“We have some potential in the local players, and last year we provided opportunities for the Silktail boys. This year, we want to concentrate on the Vodafone Cup players, as I’ve been particularly impressed by some of the young kids and their individual skills,” Kativerata noted.
He mentioned that they have already identified a couple of promising players whom they aim to develop for the future. “We are not going to rush Hayne back into playing; instead, we want him to come in for training and provide guidance to the younger players.”
Kativerata emphasized that Hayne’s experience in the NRL makes him an excellent role model for the Fijian squad, suggesting that his presence will inspire and motivate the team.
The selection process for the team is currently awaiting NRL approval concerning the eligibility of some players based overseas. Once these approvals are secured, the official squad will be announced, potentially featuring promising local talents alongside seasoned players like Hayne.
The Fiji Bati team for the Pacific Bowl Championship is expected to be named later this week.
