Former Vodafone Fiji Bati and NRL star Jarryd Hayne is thrilled to be back in Fiji and looks forward to the physical match this weekend as Fiji prepares to face Papua New Guinea.

Hayne, who returned to Fiji this week, will not be playing but is actively involved in assisting with the team’s preparations. He expressed his enthusiasm for being able to contribute, particularly in developing the team’s attacking strategies.

“It’s great to be back home. Wise spoke with me about coming to help, and I’m more than happy to be here, to lend a hand wherever I can, especially with the team’s attack plays,” said Hayne.

Reflecting on rugby league’s role in Fiji, Hayne emphasized the cultural significance of the sport and its power to unite communities. He praised the NRL for organizing the championship and acknowledged the impressive rise of Fijian players in the league, highlighting the cultural celebration that such events promote.

Hayne spoke highly of the strength of the Papua New Guinea team, noting, “PNG is probably the only nation in the world where it doesn’t matter who they play; you just know they’re going to be tough. Their rugby league culture is all about brute force, and they love to run straight. It doesn’t matter who they select; you always know what to expect.”

He also shared his thoughts on the Fiji Bati squad, remarking on the return of several notable rugby league stars. “It’s fantastic for the boys to come back, especially since they’ve been playing for nearly 11 months. For them to return at the end of the season and engage in the championships is incredible. We expect a good crowd and plenty of talent on display this Saturday night.”

The Fiji Bati will begin its Pacific Championships campaign against the PNG Kumuls this Saturday at 8:10 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
