Harmony in Diversity: Celebrating Prophet Muhammad’s Legacy in Fiji

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting values such as peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical conduct. He called for reflection on these principles during the celebrations of the Prophet’s Birthday by Fiji’s Muslim community.

Prof. Prasad noted that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct are essential for the social, economic, and political development of the nation. He recognized the significant contributions of all religious groups in Fiji, particularly in education and community life, acknowledging the Muslim community as a key player in national progress.

He stated that these values are fundamental for achieving lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance, while also promoting inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice. Additionally, he referenced a historical agreement from 1974 when the National Federation Party, led by Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, collaborated with then-Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to designate both Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays to honor the Indo-Fijian community.

Prof. Prasad reaffirmed the importance of bipartisanship in serving the national interest and extended his best wishes to the Muslim community for a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday in Fiji’s diverse society.
