Hangar Hopes: Will Luxury Travel at COMO Laucala Island Soar?

A multi-million-dollar hangar project at COMO Laucala Island may need a “miracle” to open within the next two months, according to sources familiar with the situation. However, once operational, it is expected to boost employment figures on the island.

The construction of the luxury hangar at Nadi International Airport has faced numerous delays, with several tentative opening dates announced over the years. Although the luxury lounge at the airport is already functioning, the hangar was initially intended to be completed by year-end.

The new hangar will enhance the travel experience for guests traveling to and from Kokomo Private Island by providing direct access to the luxury lounge after they arrive on international flights. Visitors will be welcomed at an information desk in the arrivals area and then taken to the lounge, which will offer refreshments, entertainment, a family playroom, and shower facilities. Guests will also be able to relax in the lounge while awaiting their connecting flights.

Recent delays have been attributed to a mix-up in concrete used for the connecting apron, which required removal and replacement.

In terms of project history:
– In 2019, the $45 million luxury lounge and hangar facility was announced.
– A stop order for construction was issued in 2022.
– The stop order was lifted in 2023.

Notably, Laucala Island is recognized as a high-end destination frequented by celebrities, according to Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who previously mentioned that a “bottleneck” in investment contributed to the delays. COMO Laucala Island features a private airstrip and offers 25 opulent villas, along with three aircraft that have been in operation for years.
