A multi-million-dollar hangar construction project at COMO Laucala Island is unlikely to open within the next two months, as indicated by sources close to the development. When operational, it is expected to boost employment at the luxury resort.
The tourism operator has faced several delays, with numerous “Coming Soon” dates throughout its construction history. Although the luxury lounge at Nadi International Airport is already functional, the hangar was initially set to open by the end of the year.
Completion of the hangar is essential for ensuring a smooth transfer experience for guests traveling to and from Kokomo Private Island. Upon arrival from international flights, guests will be welcomed at the information desk in the arrivals hall and escorted directly to the new luxury lounge, which will offer refreshments, entertainment, a family playroom, and shower facilities for those looking to refresh after long flights. Departing guests will also have access to the lounge while waiting for their connecting flights.
The opening delay is partially attributed to an issue with the incorrect concrete mix used for the connecting apron, which necessitated excavation and replacement.
In 2019, the $45 million luxury lounge and hangar project was announced. Construction faced a stop order in 2022, which was officially lifted in 2023.
Laucala Island is known as a high-end destination frequented by luxury travelers, as noted by Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who last year referenced delays due to “bottlenecks” in the investment sector. The private island resort in Fiji features an airstrip for private planes and 25 luxurious villas. The tourism property has three aircraft that have been operational for several years.
