A multi-million-dollar hangar project at COMO Laucala Island may require a “miracle” to open within the next two months, according to sources familiar with the situation. Once operational, however, the hangar is expected to boost employment figures on the island.
The tourism operator’s project in Nadi has faced numerous delays, with several proposed opening dates that have not materialized. While the luxury lounge at Nadi International Airport is currently open, the completion of the hangar is anticipated before the year’s end.
The new facility at Nadi Airport aims to provide a smooth transfer experience for guests traveling to Kokomo Private Island. Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed at the information desk in the arrivals hall and then escorted to the luxury lounge, which will offer refreshments, entertainment, a play area for children, and shower facilities for travelers coming off long-haul flights. Before departing, guests will again enjoy the lounge’s amenities while awaiting their connecting flights.
The delay in the hangar’s construction has been attributed to a faulty concrete mix used for the connecting apron, which had to be replaced.
In 2019, the announcement for COMO Laucala Island’s $45 million luxury lounge and hangar facility was made, but construction faced a stop order in 2022, which was only lifted in 2023.
Known for attracting high-profile visitors, Laucala Island is recognized as a destination for luxury travelers. Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica noted that last year’s delay in the hangar’s development was due to challenges in securing investment.
COMO Laucala Island, a private resort in Fiji, features its own airstrip for private aircraft and hosts 25 luxurious villas. The resort has operated three aircraft for several years.
