A multi-million-dollar hangar construction project at COMO Laucala Island may require a ‘miracle’ to open within the next two months, according to sources close to the development. However, once operational, it is expected to boost employment on the island.
The tourism operator’s Nadi project has faced numerous delays, with multiple “Coming Soon” opening dates amid its inconsistent construction timeline. While the luxury lounge at Nadi International Airport is currently open, the hangar was initially scheduled for completion by the year’s end.
The new hangar at Nadi Airport aims to provide a smooth experience for guests traveling to and from Kokomo Private Island. Guests arriving on international flights will be welcomed at the information desk in the arrivals hall and then transferred to the luxury lounge, which offers refreshments, entertainment, a family playroom, and shower facilities for travelers after long-haul flights. On their departure, guests will enjoy the amenities of the luxury lounge while waiting for their connecting flight from Fiji.
Delays in the hangar’s opening were partly attributed to issues with the concrete mix used on the connecting apron, which required removal and replacement.
In 2019, the $45 million luxury lounge and hangar facilities were announced for COMO Laucala Island. A stop order was placed on construction in 2022 but was lifted in 2023. Laucala Island is known as a high-end destination frequented by affluent individuals, according to Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who noted that previous delays were due to “bottlenecks” in the investor sector.
COMO Laucala Island is a private resort in Fiji with an airstrip for private aircraft and 25 luxurious villas. The property has three aircraft that have been serving guests for several years.
