Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka delivered a resolute New Year’s Day message, emphasizing the need to move away from handouts and focus on sustainable poverty alleviation in Fiji. He outlined the Coalition Government’s vision for 2025, which aims to lift the most marginalized communities out of poverty through targeted initiatives, addressing one village at a time.
Rabuka acknowledged the challenges involved, asserting that while the transformation will not happen overnight, it is achievable through innovative approaches and investments. He stated, “We all deserve a life of dignity,” highlighting the importance of creating livelihoods for everyone, whether employed or self-employed.
The Prime Minister called for a collaborative effort across the entire nation, emphasizing the critical role of the private sector in this endeavor, with government support facilitating the process. He outlined various initiatives undertaken by the Coalition Government over the past two years, focusing on ensuring the right to housing, sanitation, adequate food, and clean water for all Fijians.
To enhance water supply access, the government has introduced the Rural Water and Sanitation Policy, aiming to provide clean drinking water and hygiene facilities, particularly in rural and maritime areas. Rabuka revealed that the Water Authority of Fiji has a budget of $259 million dedicated to several projects, including a rainwater harvesting scheme that equips remote households with tanks and equipment for water storage.
In addition, Rabuka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to existing social protection programs such as the Family Assistance Scheme, Disability Allowance Scheme, and various others aimed at providing ongoing support to vulnerable populations.
This New Year message resonates with hope and determination as the government shifts its focus to empowering communities and fostering self-reliance, laying the groundwork for a more prosperous future. If implemented effectively, these initiatives could pave the way for a brighter outlook for many Fijians facing adversity.
