Handmade crafts by people with disabilities boost inclusion and income this festive season

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities in the Northern Division is preparing for the festive season by offering a selection of handmade crafts perfect for events, functions, and home décor. Clerical Officer North, Monisha Rao, highlighted that students with diverse abilities are creating a range of household items that are now available for purchase, contributing to their financial independence and well-being.

Rao expressed her hope for a shift in perception, urging people to recognize abilities rather than disabilities. “We have young adults with disabilities at the centre crafting items such as garments, pillows, pillowcases, and cushion covers. These products not only provide them with the skills needed for income generation but also present opportunities for greater market exposure,” she stated. The centre recently participated in International Disability Day, showcasing their offerings to expand potential markets for their craftsmen.

Teacher Reshma Prasad emphasized that genuine opportunities can lead to success and independence for individuals with disabilities. “We celebrate their abilities and strive to facilitate growth in every possible way. Every child deserves equal opportunities, and it’s essential to acknowledge that talent exists in every individual,” she said.

While acknowledging that stigma around disabilities has lessened over the years, Prasad asserted that further awareness and increased accessibility are necessary to ensure inclusivity.

With the festive season on the horizon, the centre hopes that their handcrafted products will not only draw customers but also foster a marketplace that appreciates talent, embraces inclusion, and recognizes the economic potential within every individual. This initiative not only provides a platform for individuals with disabilities to flourish but also champions a step toward a more inclusive society.
