Hamas announced on Saturday that it aims to amend a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal with Israel regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, deemed Hamas’ response as “totally unacceptable.” The Palestinian militant group expressed willingness to release ten living hostages and return the bodies of 18 deceased in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, while reiterating demands for a complete cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza—conditions Israeli officials have consistently rejected.
A Hamas spokesperson referred to their response as “positive” but indicated a desire for specific amendments, details of which remain undisclosed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that while his government had accepted the framework proposed by Witkoff, Hamas’s ongoing refusal to comply complicates the situation further. Netanyahu asserted that Israel will persist in its efforts to secure the release of hostages and the dismantling of Hamas.
In a statement, Hamas emphasized that its response is directed towards achieving a permanent ceasefire, a full military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the unfettered flow of humanitarian aid into the region. This comes amidst reports of a dire humanitarian crisis, with aid organizations citing severe shortages due to a total blockade that has left communities struggling for basic necessities. Recent incidents included hijacking and looting of World Food Programme trucks carrying essential supplies, worsening conditions for the civilian population.
The United Nations characterized the situation as the most severe since the war’s onset 19 months ago, warning of famine risks. With over 53,000 Palestinian deaths reported since the conflict intensified following the October 2023 attack by Hamas, the ongoing military campaign and humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain critically concerning.
As the international community watches closely, the possibility for renewed dialogue and humanitarian support could open pathways toward a more stable resolution. While the complexities of military operations and diplomatic negotiations present formidable challenges, sustained global advocacy for humanitarian relief remains essential. The Gazan population’s resilience during these tumultuous times serves as a reminder of the urgent need for peace and assistance.
