Hamas announced it is ready to collaborate with the Red Cross to provide aid to the hostages it holds in Gaza, contingent on certain conditions being met by Israel. This move comes after a disturbing video released by Hamas featured an emaciated Israeli captive, prompting widespread outrage from Western nations.

For coordination with the Red Cross to be productive, Hamas insists that Israel must permanently open humanitarian corridors and suspend airstrikes during the aid distribution process. Israeli officials reported that 50 hostages are currently in Gaza, with only 20 believed to be alive, as Hamas has restricted humanitarian access to these individuals, leaving families with scant information on their wellbeing.

In light of the gravity of the situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sought the Red Cross’s assistance in delivering humanitarian support to the hostages. The Hostages Families Forum, representing relatives of the captives, stated that Hamas’ claims cannot disguise the fact that it has been holding “innocent people in impossible conditions for over 660 days,” demanding their immediate release and emphasizing that the group must care for the hostages it has taken.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is exacerbated by continuous violence and restrictions on aid. Over the past 24 hours, six additional individuals died from starvation or malnutrition, as reported by Gaza’s health ministry. In this context, some hope remains that increased international pressure can lead to a ceasefire and facilitate a more effective humanitarian response, allowing much-needed assistance to reach those in desperate need.

International advocacy and efforts to enhance humanitarian pathways remain crucial, as the ongoing conflict has led to severe hardships for the civilian population in Gaza. The persistent resilience displayed by Gazans amidst such challenges inspires hope for eventual improvements in their circumstances.
