Hamas Expands Control in Gaza as Prices Surge Under Blockade

Hamas is intensifying its grip on Gaza, aiming to broaden its control over the territory as the United States formulates future plans for the region. Following a ceasefire last month, the group bolstered its authority in areas where Israeli forces withdrew, taking drastic measures against suspected collaborators, which resulted in numerous fatalities among Palestinians. Amid international demands for Hamas to disarm and relinquish control, doubts arise about whether the organization will genuinely cede power.

Recent reports from several Gazans indicate an observable increase in Hamas’s regulatory presence in their daily lives. Hamas has begun closely monitoring and imposing fees on various imported goods, including fuel and cigarettes, while also penalizing merchants caught overpricing. Many residents, including local merchants, express frustration over the rising costs of necessities, which they attribute to limited supply chains and control measures by the authorities. Hatem Abu Dalal, a mall owner, conveyed that escalating prices stem from insufficient goods arriving in Gaza, a situation that officials are attempting to manage by regulating the economy.

In attempting to assert control, Hamas now claims that any reports of tax increases on cigarettes and fuel are inaccurate, according to Ismail Al-Thawabta, the head of Hamas’s media office. Despite this, residents like Mohammed Khalifa have noted the chaotic fluctuations in prices, likening the market to a “stock exchange.”

This context of increasing regulation comes during a backdrop of tightened goods entry into Gaza due to Israeli actions, which have also sparked significant humanitarian concerns. Reports indicate that the blockade has severely impacted daily living conditions, contributing to food shortages and rising prices as basic necessities become less accessible.

Notably, previous articles have shed light on the dire humanitarian plight in the region due to the ongoing conflict, illustrating that over 48,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since October 2023. The United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have continuously raised alarms regarding the deteriorating conditions for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, emphasizing the urgent need for international support and engagement.

As Washington deliberates its approach to the volatile situation, the resilience of Gazans amid adversity remains evident. While challenges abound, the potential for dialogue and international compassion may open pathways toward stabilizing the precarious circumstances in Gaza. The ongoing situation illustrates the pressing need for a negotiated settlement that addresses humanitarian efforts and the broader quest for peace in the region.
