Nearly 300 firefighters in South Korea were dispatched on Friday to combat a significant blaze in Guryong Village, a lower-income area within the affluent Gangnam district of southern Seoul. According to a fire official, while no casualties have been reported, 47 residents were evacuated to ensure their safety.
Fire officials have elevated the alert level of the fire to the second tier, expressing concerns that the flames could spread to a nearby mountain. A total of 85 fire trucks were deployed to manage the situation; however, aerial support from helicopters was hindered due to haze and fine dust that enveloped the city.
Safety Minister Yun Ho-jung emphasized the urgency of the situation, instructing authorities to “mobilize all available personnel and equipment to focus fully on rescuing lives and extinguishing the fire,” as reported by the Yonhap News Agency.
Guryong Village, characterized by its dilapidated housing, lies in stark contrast to the surrounding wealth of Gangnam, one of Seoul’s most affluent areas. Plans for the region include redevelopment into high-rise residential buildings, illustrating the significant changes that could transform this area in the future.
