The village of Gunu in Yasawa is beaming with pride following the selection of Akuila Dranivotua to the Fiji Airways Men’s 7s squad for the upcoming Vancouver leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series. For Dranivotua’s family, this moment represents the realization of a cherished dream, achieved through countless sacrifices, determination, and an unwavering belief in his potential.

Tevita Rauga, Dranivotua’s uncle, expressed the significance of this achievement for their family. “This is a great morning for us as a family, as Akuila has been named into the Fiji men’s 7s squad,” he shared, reflecting on the emotional weight of the announcement.

Rauga acknowledged the arduous journey his nephew has faced, emphasizing that every challenge has made this moment even more rewarding. “The challenges and hardships he faced until now are a great thing for us as a family and also the whole village of Gunu. We’re so happy for him on what he has achieved. I know it has been his dream for a long time, and now he has accomplished it.”

Dranivotua’s rugby career commenced at a grassroots level with the Volivolitakelo Rugby Club, which his family believes was instrumental in his development as a player. As he prepares for the Vancouver tournament next weekend, the family’s message to him is to compete with heart and faith.

“Our prayer is that he will go and perform to the best of his abilities in Vancouver and that God will be with him in his games,” Rauga added, highlighting the support and encouragement from their community.

This proud moment in Gunu serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted traditions of resilience and passion that are so integral to Fiji’s rugby culture, and the village remains hopeful for Dranivotua’s success on the international stage.
