As the Easter weekend approaches, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is ramping up its inspection and monitoring activities to protect consumers from unethical practices by dishonest traders. This initiative is particularly important during high-spending periods when instances of unfair price hikes and misleading promotions often arise.
FCCC CEO Senikavika Jiuta has issued a firm warning to all businesses, stating that violations will be met with stringent legal consequences. To ensure compliance, the entire FCCC team will be involved in nationwide inspections and market surveillance, aiming for comprehensive coverage across the country.
During recent pre-Easter inspections, the FCCC identified several troubling issues, such as a lack of price displays, spoiled food products, including rotten potatoes and onions, and discrepancies between sale prices and the amounts charged at checkout. Jiuta has urged the public to report any violations they encounter, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness and vigilance.
This proactive approach by the FCCC echoes its earlier efforts during the festive Christmas season, where it conducted numerous inspections to address issues like price gouging and misleading promotions. In that case, more than 700 inspections were carried out, uncovering numerous potential violations, including overcharging and improper pricing displays.
