Growing Green: How Youth Are Cultivating a Sustainable Future on International Day of Forests

The International Day of Forests, celebrated annually on March 21, underscores the vital role forests play in maintaining life on Earth. This year’s theme, “Forests and Foods,” sheds light on the significance of forests for food security, nutrition, and the livelihoods of communities, while promoting sustainable management and conservation practices.

At St. Joseph’s Secondary School, students joined forces with officers from the Ministry of Forestry to engage in a tree-planting initiative at the Suva maritime foreshore, where they successfully planted 100 mangrove seedlings. This action aims to enhance the protection of coastal ecosystems and reflects a broader movement toward community involvement in sustainability, seen in various initiatives throughout Fiji.

To mark the International Day of Forests, celebrations will conclude at Naivucini in Naitasiri, where participants will discuss the integral role forests play in environmental health and human well-being. These gatherings resonate with other projects, such as the Vesi Reforestation Initiative and food forest efforts on Yanuya Island, which are focused on restoring native wood species and involving young people in sustainable practices. Involving children in these tree-planting activities nurtures their sense of responsibility toward the environment while securing future food sources and promoting economic resilience in their communities.

These community-led initiatives serve as a hopeful reminder of the profound impact that collective efforts can have on enhancing biodiversity and preserving cultural traditions for future generations. By merging cultural heritage with sustainable practices, there lies a promise for a greener, more prosperous future.

This year’s observance of the International Day of Forests not only highlights the ecological and cultural importance of forests but also emphasizes the involvement of youth in sustainability efforts, a crucial step toward achieving a sustainable and equitable future for all.
