Tomasi Tunabuna, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, recently visited the Sigatoka Research Station, where he engaged with livestock officers overseeing the Embryo Transfer cattle programme. During his visit, Tunabuna discussed innovative methods to enhance the livestock industry, particularly its impact on local farmers and its future prospects.
He expressed gratitude for the officers’ dedication and urged them to persist in their essential research, which is vital for the growth and sustainability of the sector. Tunabuna reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to developing a thriving, economically beneficial, and sustainable beef and dairy industry, emphasizing the significant role that research in Sigatoka plays in achieving these goals.
The livestock team presented new technologies, notably the Embryo Transfer programme, which involves the implantation of high-quality cattle embryos into local cows to develop improved breeds that are resilient to climate changes and capable of higher production levels. Agriculture Officer Jovilisi Tabuyaqona elaborated on the procedure, which involves the collection, fertilization, and implantation of embryos into local cows.
Furthermore, the programme aims to enhance cattle nutrition and pasture quality while ensuring proper enclosures to support healthier livestock. At present, the Sigatoka Research Station is home to 288 cattle, representing several breeds, including Senepol, Droughtmaster, Wagyu, F1 Cross, and Brown Swiss.
This initiative not only highlights the commitment to improving livestock quality in Fiji but also represents a positive step towards sustainable agricultural practices that can benefit local farmers and contribute to the nation’s economy.
