Growing Concern: Rise in Girls Involved in Drug Use in Schools

The Ministry of Education is alarmed by a rising incidence of drug possession and use among schoolgirls. This year, reports indicate that around ten girls from a prominent high school were referred to the ministry after being found under the influence of drugs or in possession of them, as stated by Vilisimani Rakikau, the ministry’s Substance Abuse Counsellor.

Although drug use is often stereotypically associated with boys, Rakikau emphasized that the increase in drug-related incidents among girls cannot be ignored. The Central Division has seen a particularly noticeable upsurge in these troubling cases. When serious reports arise, the ministry directs them to law enforcement while providing counselling to affected students. School heads are quick to alert the ministry when issues arise, enabling a prompt response.

Rakikau expressed concern over the trend, noting that while there had been a relatively small number of juvenile offenders between 2019 and 2023 (with the majority being in the 18 to 35 age group), the rise in incidents regarding younger school-aged children is particularly worrisome. Assistant Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci noted that this age group has had the highest number of reported offenders, peaking in the early 2020s.

The ministry has also received unsettling reports of primary school students being exploited as “runners” for drug deliveries. One significant case involved a second-grade student who unknowingly delivered drugs, which had been packed in their lunchbox by a parent, to a suspect outside the school.

As the festive season approaches, Rakikau has urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant regarding their children’s whereabouts. He encouraged them to keep a closer eye on their children, emphasizing that safety at home is paramount. Senior Superintendent Salanieta Radaniva of the Fiji Police Force echoed this sentiment, reminding parents of their pivotal role in ensuring their children’s safety, especially during school breaks.

In summary, the growing trend of drug involvement among girls in schools presents a serious concern for the Ministry of Education. However, with increased awareness and timely intervention from both parents and authorities, there is hope for addressing and reversing this trend, ensuring a safer environment for the youth.

This article underscores the importance of community vigilance and the proactive measures that can be taken to safeguard children’s well-being.
