A groundbreaking open-heart surgery at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospital (PSH) earlier this week has marked a significant achievement for the Nadi-based facility. The surgery, known as Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), was performed on 61-year-old Kusum Lata from Natabua by a skilled team of Cardio Thoracic specialists, and it went smoothly without any complications.

Lata expressed immense gratitude towards the management and staff of PSH for providing exceptional care at a fraction of the cost she would have incurred for undergoing the procedure abroad. Initially, Lata experienced severe chest pains that led to a minor heart attack in June. Medical professionals in Lautoka had advised her family to budget $50,000 for her to travel to India for the surgery. It was only after a family member suggested she consider local options that they discovered PSH could perform the operation conveniently in Nadi and significantly more affordably.

“I am feeling so relieved, and all my pains have diminished after my operation,” Lata said, highlighting her appreciation for the hospital’s services and care. She is now looking forward to reuniting with her family and spending time with her grandchild.

The founder and director of PSH, Parvish Kumar, emphasized that the establishment of their new cardiology department and the successful surgery are the result of 15 months of detailed planning and investment in advanced technology. He noted that Lata was fortunate to be at PSH at that critical moment to learn about their services.

Kumar also pointed out the financial relief brought about by the surgery, which would have cost Lata’s family significantly more if performed internationally. He underscored that this pioneering surgery paves the way for developing Fiji as a health tourism destination, combining high-quality healthcare services with attractive holiday options.

By investing in healthcare infrastructure, PSH aims to boost the local economy through health tourism, offering high-quality medical services at lower costs compared to other countries.

This achievement not only reaffirms the capabilities of local healthcare facilities but also inspires hope for those in need of similar procedures in the future, demonstrating that high-quality care can be accessible without the burden of exorbitant costs.
