The Taikita Brothers, a grassroots rugby team from Vatukaloko, Ra, are set to make their debut at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s next week, which will be held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka from Thursday to Saturday. The tournament will see them compete alongside 15 other men’s teams, featuring top local and international competitors.

Despite being formed less than a year ago, the Taikita Brothers have already demonstrated significant progress, having participated in three Fiji Bitter 7s tournaments, which have equipped them with essential experience. Team manager Mosese Bokini expressed the thrill of participating in such a prestigious event. “We are not even one year old, it’s hard to handle the boys, but now we are in the right position to compete against the best,” he said.

The Taikita Brothers were established by local village boys, mostly farmers, who chose to split from the Naiyalayala Rugby Club in search of a unique identity and purpose. Bokini noted, “We started this club to drive the boys more into sports, steering them away from drugs that can harm their reputation.” Their goal as the only grassroots team competing is to earn the chance to play against top international talent.

The players are motivated and have been preparing by watching Fiji 7s and Drua matches online. Bokini expressed gratitude toward their supporters from Vatukaloko, as well as their hosts in Semo, Nadroga, for their ongoing support and hospitality. “This journey is for our vanua and the love of rugby. We are ready to give our best,” he affirmed.

The participation of the Taikita Brothers in the Coral Coast 7s represents a hopeful opportunity not only for them but also for other grassroots teams across Fiji. They aspire to demonstrate that with determination and focus, remarkable achievements are within reach, regardless of a team’s age or experience. The upcoming tournament promises to be an exciting platform to showcase their potential and inspire other young athletes in their pursuit of excellence in rugby.
