Grassroots Rugby Takes Center Stage: Exciting Changes for Fiji Marist Sevens!

The 49th Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament, scheduled for March 20-22 at the HFC Bank Stadium, is set to enhance grassroots rugby by reducing ticket prices. Tournament director Lawrence Tikaram announced this initiative during a launch event in Suva, emphasizing the value of attending as fans will enjoy three days of live matches for just $22. This pricing is available exclusively online and allows spectators to experience over 200 games featuring 95 teams and 1500 players.

In line with promoting community support, Tikaram urged rugby enthusiasts to come out and witness emerging talents showcasing their skills. This year, the tournament will also provide financial incentives for teams, with cash prizes totaling $48,800, including $5,000 for the women’s champion and additional stakes ranging from $2,000 for first place to $1,000 for third in the Discovery Shield category, aimed at self-funded grassroots teams.

The participation matrix for the tournament includes 52 teams in the men’s category, nine in the women’s category, as well as divisions for U18-21 boys and girls. The event stands out not only for its competitive spirit but also for its commitment to inclusivity, fostering community ties through youth engagement and providing a platform for the sport’s development in Fiji.

Additionally, sponsors like Pacific Energy contribute significantly to nurturing future rugby talent, reinforcing the tournament’s role as a communal celebration of the sport. The affordable ticket prices and substantial prize money reflect a hopeful outlook for grassroots rugby in the region, underlining the symbiotic relationship between the sport and the Fijian community.

The anticipation builds as teams finalize their preparations to compete in what promises to be an exciting event while encouraging unity and sporting spirit among locals and visitors alike, celebrating the vibrant rugby culture of Fiji.
