The 31st R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament aims to revolutionize grassroots rugby in the nation, according to tournament director Solo Finau. During the official launch at the R.C. Manubhai Suva branch store, Finau emphasized the importance of evolving the game’s approach to foster improvement among players and coaches.

He highlighted the introduction of a new tournament format featuring bonus points, which will be used for the first time. One bonus point will be awarded when a player scores under the posts and successfully converts the try, while a second bonus point is given for teams that achieve a converted try, a converted penalty, and a drop goal within seven minutes.

Finau explained that the initiative is designed to broaden players’ perspectives on scoring and introduce new strategies, encouraging teams to enhance their defensive capabilities as they adapt to these changes. He noted that historically, significant matches—such as World Cups—have been decided by drop goals, showcasing the strategic importance of this scoring method.

He expressed hope that this innovative tournament format will pave the way for a new generation of players in the national sevens team, fostering a competitive spirit that can elevate the overall quality of the game. Finau also indicated that the tournament will not only serve as a platform for competition but will also impart valuable strategies that teams can utilize in future events.

Atish Singh, the regional manager of R.C. Manubhai, conveyed the company’s pride in sponsoring the Nataleira Sevens, affirming that the tournament continues to grow annually and aims to deliver an even more significant experience next year. The event is scheduled to take place at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori from December 19 to 21.

This tournament’s fresh approach is a promising step towards enhancing the standards and appeal of rugby in the grassroots community, with the potential to inspire young athletes and invigorate the sport in the region.

In summary, the Nataleira Sevens aims to innovate rugby through strategic changes and a new competitive framework, ensuring a future where grassroots players can thrive and elevate the national rugby scene.
