The Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament is set to introduce an innovative competition format that will allow established teams from across Fiji to compete alongside emerging teams from grassroots levels. Announced by James Vunituraga, the tournament director, during the launch event at Paradise Beverages headquarters in Suva, this new structure aims to elevate the playing experience for all participants.
In the revamped format, teams will be categorized into two groups: elite teams and grassroots teams. Each category will be broken down further into four pools, with the winners progressing to elimination rounds. This setup will not only allow the top teams to advance in their pursuits but will provide grassroots teams with an opportunity to challenge themselves against higher-level competition, fostering growth and development in local rugby.
Vunituraga emphasized the significance of this arrangement, stating it opens doors for grassroots teams to showcase their talents on a larger stage. He noted that the competition is structured to allow these teams to compete for not just the main title, but also for other honors like the bowl and shield finals.
Alfaio Tekavei, a sponsorship and events specialist for Fiji Bitter, also expressed enthusiasm for the new format, highlighting its potential to create an engaging and captivating tournament, particularly beneficial for grassroots teams.
The Mataso 7s tournament will take place from November 15-17 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, marking a significant event for rugby enthusiasts in the region.
This exciting development not only promotes inclusiveness in the sport but also promises to enhance the competitive spirit and flow of talent between experienced and novice players, bolstering the sport’s future in Fiji.
