The Fiji Sports Council’s Grassroots Fiji Nacula 7s tournament has been hailed as a resounding success, bringing together 24 rugby 7s teams from across the Yasawa Group of Islands for two days of spirited competition at the Ratu Luke Memorial School ground in Nacula. The Vitiroofing FSC Grassroots Fiji 7s team emerged victorious by defeating Volivolitakelo with a score of 21-0 in the finals.
This tournament not only showcased incredible rugby skill but also attracted strong community support, with the picturesque surroundings of the Yasawa Islands enhancing the event’s atmosphere. Many teams traveled from various villages, reflecting the deep-seated passion for rugby in the region.
In a notable development, this year’s tournament introduced netball, which replaced volleyball in the lineup of events. Emosi Lasaqa, Fiji Sports Council’s communications officer, remarked that the inclusion of netball particularly resonated with female athletes, as 12 teams from the Yasawa group and one from Suva participated in the new segment, adding an exciting layer of inclusivity to the competition.
The event was further elevated by the attendance of the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, who officially launched the Yasawa Netball Association. His engagement underscored the Ministry’s commitment to supporting rural sports development and empowering women through athletic opportunities.
The tournament received valuable logistical support from key partners, including South Sea Cruises, Awesome Adventures Fiji, and Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, which helped facilitate the transport and accommodations for teams and officials, enriching the experience for everyone involved. Fiji Sports Council Acting CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure acknowledged the community and partners for their ongoing dedication to nurturing grassroots sports in these remote areas.
Reflecting on the importance of such initiatives, events like the Grassroots Fiji Nacula 7s emphasize the role of sports in uniting communities and fostering youth development, which ultimately creates opportunities and nurtures talent across Fiji. These tournaments not only bring excitement and enjoyment but also serve as important platforms for young athletes to thrive.
Through these efforts, the future of sports in Fiji looks positive, promising continued growth and development in both rugby and netball within the unique cultural landscape of the Yasawa Islands.
