The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is poised to conclude the 2025 rugby sevens season with the much-anticipated Grassroots Fiji 7s, taking place on December 18–19 at the HFC Bank Stadium. This tournament aims to highlight the nation’s promising rugby talent while offering significant prize money across various divisions, encompassing men’s, women’s, and U20 categories.
The Council is looking to attract 24 men’s teams to the main draw, with a lucrative cup prize of $10,000 awaiting the winning team, amid a registration fee of $1,000. In the U20 Division, a total of 12 teams are invited to compete, with the cup victor set to receive $5,000 for a registration fee of $500. Furthermore, the women’s division will engage players vying for a top prize of $3,000, with a more accessible registration fee of $300.
FSC Chief Executive Officer Gilbert Vakalalabure emphasized the tournament’s purpose, stating, “This tournament is more than just a competition; it’s about nurturing grassroots rugby, giving players a platform to shine, and celebrating the game at all levels.” He noted that this initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance grassroots rugby in Fiji and to provide players an opportunity to earn recognition and potentially advance to higher levels of competition.
In addition to rugby, this year’s event will include volleyball, setting the stage for what is expected to be the largest prize pool in the history of Fijian volleyball tournaments, further enriching the sporting landscape.
Furthermore, the Grassroots Fiji 7s series will see its second leg hosted in Bua on January 16-17, 2026, with more 7s tournaments planned for the upcoming year. The incoming tournament at the HFC Bank Stadium is eagerly awaited, promising competitive matchups, generous prizes, and a vibrant atmosphere celebrating Fiji’s grassroots sports talent.
