A significant investment of $7.5 million has been dedicated to reinventing the former Nadi Bay Resort, now known as the Grand Melanesian Resort Wailoaloa. The acquisition, made by Grand Melanesian Hotel for $2.5 million in February 2023, reflects a keen vision for revitalizing the property, which was acquired during a mortgage sale.
Director Nitin Hira Lal expressed confidence in the property’s potential despite the extensive costs involved in renovation. “We thought we could do it and it would work, especially with the way tourism is currently in Fiji,” he stated. Over a span of two years, the renovation has consumed approximately $5 million, with an additional investment of $1 million planned for later this year. Mr. Lal emphasized the extensive overhaul, explaining that “the whole thing was gutted and redone; only the structure remained,” resulting in fully refurbished rooms catering to a range of guests, from shared dorms to deluxe apartments.
As the new resort prepares to welcome guests, it features a mix of amenities, including two swimming pools, two conference rooms, and three bars, enhancing the overall guest experience. Once operational, the resort plans to employ about 25 full-time staff members, contributing to local employment.
Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, applauded the successful transformation of the resort, remarking on its role in supporting Fiji’s tourism landscape. “Congratulations to the newly renovated and renamed Grand Melanesian Resort Wailoaloa. It provides a fantastic array of accommodation and great rates,” he noted.
In addition, Lawrence Kumar, the former Special Administrator Chair of Nadi Town Council, highlighted the positive signals this project sends regarding increasing investor interest in Fiji’s hospitality industry. He acknowledged the evident demand for enhanced hospitality services but also cautioned about the challenges in turning interest into tangible growth. Nevertheless, GMR’s commitment to supporting the industry showcases a proactive approach.
This transformation not only revitalizes a key property in Nadi but also signals a long-term optimism for the Fijian tourism sector, particularly as it aligns with recent developments aimed at expanding accommodation offerings throughout the region.
Overall, the renovation of the Grand Melanesian Resort Wailoaloa offers a promising outlook for both the local community and the tourism industry, potentially leading to increased visitor numbers and new job opportunities.
