Former Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, has asserted that the investigation into the issuance of passports to minors linked to the Grace Road group is far from “a waste of time.” In a recent social media post, Tikoduadua raised concerns regarding allegations that the authority of the minister may have been bypassed during the passport issuance process, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the Passports Act of 2002 to maintain system integrity.
Tikoduadua noted the necessity of a thorough investigation into any unauthorized actions that could undermine public trust and governance. He explained that he had temporarily stepped aside from his ministerial responsibilities to facilitate a transparent and independent inquiry into the allegations.
“I strongly disagree with the suggestion that this investigation is unnecessary,” he stated. “My intention is to investigate the matter thoroughly to ensure all relevant facts come to light.” He reiterated his full support for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in assessing the evidence and urged all parties to refrain from speculation or political manipulation regarding the issue.
This inquiry follows earlier revelations where Tikoduadua had announced his decision to step back amidst an investigation into unauthorized passport issuances. He expressed that these concerns were serious breaches of protocol, given that the passports were reportedly issued without his consent, the Permanent Secretary’s approval, or clearance from senior Immigration Department officials. Tikoduadua has pledged complete cooperation with the investigation, which has significant implications for the integrity of the national administration.
This proactive approach by the minister signifies a commitment to transparency in governance, which is crucial for maintaining public confidence. As the investigation unfolds, there is hope it will lead to improved oversight mechanisms within the Department of Immigration and restore trust in governmental processes. It showcases the importance of accountability and the willingness of government officials to address allegations head-on, ultimately working towards a more reliable and trustworthy system for the people of Fiji.
