Labour officers from the Ministry of Employment are set to conduct inspections across all businesses operated by the Grace Road Group (GRG) in response to allegations concerning violations of labor laws. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh announced that the inquiry will focus on investigating these purported breaches.
When questioned about the specific labor violations under investigation, Mr. Singh noted that details would be clarified during the ongoing inquiry. He emphasized that the numerous locations requiring review will extend the investigation timeline, stating, “We will confirm all alleged breaches during our thorough investigation.”
If GRG is found in violation of the labor laws, they will face appropriate consequences, as the government is committed to ensuring compliance with Fiji’s labor regulations for all entities. “We want to make sure that the laws of Fiji are adhered to… The laws apply to everyone equally,” Mr. Singh asserted.
In response to the ministry’s announcement, Grace Road Group issued a statement expressing their surprise. They indicated that they have not yet received any official notification regarding the alleged breaches, preventing them from commenting further at this stage. The group highlighted its role in employing over 800 local staff across various operations in Fiji, specifically aiming to support gender equality and local economic development through job creation.
GRG management reassured the public that they have consistently operated within legal parameters and are dedicated to collaborating with the ministry to resolve any issues and alleviate public concerns.
This situation underscores the importance of transparency and compliance in business practices while also highlighting GRG’s commitment to local employment and community development. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that both the company and the Ministry of Employment can come together to reinforce labor standards in a constructive manner.
