The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations has recently announced the outcome of inspections carried out on the minimum employment terms and occupational health and safety standards at Grace Road Company (GRC) across Viti Levu. Minister Agni Deo Singh reported that the inspection findings indicated violations of the Employment Relations Act of 2007 and the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1996.
Minister Singh emphasized the Ministry’s determination to follow up with additional investigations regarding the issues identified during these inspections. He reminded all employers, including Grace Road, that Fiji’s laws are applicable to both local and migrant workers equally and that the Ministry is dedicated to ensuring compliance with employment regulations.
The Minister urged Grace Road to adhere to legal requirements and ensure that employees receive the compensation they are owed.
In a broader context, this focus on workplace compliance highlights the government’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and improving safety standards in the workplace. Such actions serve not only to hold companies accountable but also promote a fair and just working environment for all individuals in Fiji.
This could serve as a pivotal moment for labor rights in the region, reinforcing the message that regulatory bodies are vigilant and responsive in their efforts to uphold the law.
