Govt Urged to Tackle Escalating Online Crimes with Actionable Solutions

The government is being urged to take immediate action to implement practical solutions to combat the rising incidence of online crimes in the country. Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal made this statement in response to a ministerial update from Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica regarding efforts by the National Taskforce aimed at addressing pornography.

Lal stressed the need for the government to adopt feasible measures, including strengthening cybercrime laws, enhancing deportation processes, and increasing resources for law enforcement to effectively track and prosecute offenders. He acknowledged that while the establishment of the taskforce is a positive step, it is crucial to recognize the challenges faced by the population, particularly young individuals and women.

He expressed appreciation for the taskforce’s updates but highlighted that the government’s actions thus far appear to be predominantly bureaucratic. According to Lal, the taskforce has generated more discussions and reviews than tangible results, emphasizing the necessity for decisive action. He pointed out that the community is becoming skeptical of processes and commissions that make bold promises but fall short on delivering substantial outcomes.

Lal also brought attention to the plight of victims of online sexual harassment, cyberbullying, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, who have long been advocating for stronger laws and better enforcement to ensure their protection. He raised concerns about the harmful effects of unregulated pornography on society, which is leading to increased instances of online harassment and violence against women and children, calling for urgent action in response.
