The government is allocating nearly 25% of its national budget to directly support its citizens. According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Prof. Biman Prasad, approximately $1 billion out of a total $4 billion budget is being distributed to assist the population.
Prof. Prasad emphasized that this funding showcases the government’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its citizens through various social welfare and economic support initiatives. He highlighted that in the past two years, the government has already invested nearly $100 million, with plans to spend an additional $40 million at the start of 2025.
One notable initiative includes providing annual support of $200 for over 200,000 students, amounting to $150 million, which is sourced from improved local tax collection efforts. Prof. Prasad mentioned that the government’s efficiency in collecting taxes has resulted in surpluses from retailers and increased revenue from both government debt and other taxes.
In addition to educational support, the government is also implementing various other assistance measures, such as subsidies and increased social welfare benefits. He pointed out that the decision to forgive $650 million in debt significantly benefits around 53,000 families, enhancing their financial stability.
Prof. Prasad noted that these extensive support measures have led to increased consumer activities and overall confidence in the economy. He stated, “So, the package that I put is working very well,” indicating a positive outlook on the effectiveness of these initiatives.
This robust budgetary commitment demonstrates the government’s dedication to creating a more secure and supportive environment for its citizens, fostering optimism for future economic stability and growth.
In summary, the government’s significant allocation of its budget for citizen support reflects a proactive approach to improve living standards and enhance economic resilience in the community. This could lead to a more confident and engaged population, ultimately benefiting the nation’s economy.
