The Fijian Drua is considering the possibility of utilizing Ba’s Govind Park as a venue for future pre-season games, Super W matches, and potentially Super Rugby Pacific competitions, according to CEO Mark Evans. Informal discussions are currently taking place with local council members and rugby officials in Ba regarding this initiative.
Evans expressed optimism about using Govind Park once its redevelopment is completed. He highlighted the positive atmosphere and quality of play he observed during the Ba rugby grand final, which he attended, and engaged in conversations with local officials, including Ba head coach Vilimoni Delasau, about the stadium’s potential.
The location of Govind Park in the Western Division is advantageous for the Drua, aligning with the team’s base in the West, which could enhance the appeal of hosting matches there. However, the utilization of Govind Park will depend on the stadium’s capacity, pitch quality, and broadcast facilities.
Evans indicated that the park could serve as an alternative venue for some of Fiji Rugby Union’s smaller international matches, should it meet the necessary competition standards. This initiative not only aims to expand the Drua’s matchday options but also demonstrates a commitment to supporting and reviving rugby in the Ba region.
This prospective plan holds promise for the local rugby community, as bringing high-level matches to Govind Park could energize interest in the sport, foster local talent, and contribute to the region’s economic development through increased footfall during match days.
