Senior Opposition MP Premila Kumar has criticized the Coalition Government for losing its way when it comes to maintaining principles and implementing consistent policies that ensure good governance. Her comments follow a controversial decision to place Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Jalesi Nakarawa on extended leave amid ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, Barbara Malimali continues her role as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), despite a secret Commission of Inquiry currently underway.
Kumar highlighted what she perceives as hypocrisy within the government’s actions, questioning the rationale behind sidelining one individual while allowing another to remain in a position of authority. She stated, “This glaring inconsistency highlights a troubling lack of clear policies. Such actions expose the dangers of appointing political allies and failed election candidates to key positions, disregarding merit and competence.”
In response, opposition leader Inia Seruiratu remarked on the government’s “consistency in inconsistency,” further illustrating the concern among political adversaries regarding the current administration’s approach to governance.
